First Meeting

A Voyage of Two Hearts

Kanna and I met on a boat — though if she tells it, she'll say I've got it wrong. She caught my eye right away. I remember thinking, 'Who wears a tutu dress on a boat? Doesn't she get cold? She must not be from here.' Too nervous to just start talking, I asked where the blankets were (I already knew) just to break the ice. She brushed me off. Later, as we were getting off the boat, I saw her playing with a dog and joined in. That's when I learned she was from Vancouver, and I told her I was from Toronto. I asked if she wanted to grab food… and the rest is history.

Kanna and I are complete opposites — she loves going out, I love staying in; she's all about summer, I'm team winter. Somehow, it works. She pushes me to be my best, and I make sure her adventures aren't too life-threatening. In our five years together, I've learned what it means to be a boyfriend, fiancé, and soon, a husband. Opposites or not, we keep growing toward each other.

It's a Shore Thing

I always knew I wanted to marry Kanna. When I learned both our families would be in the Philippines at the same time, I knew it was the perfect moment. She had two requests: to be "harana'd" and for the proposal to be epic. So in Boracay, under a glowing sunset, I sang Harana by Parokya ni Edgar with her brother Jet — then popped the question, surrounded by our families. I think it passed the 'epic' test.
